How each measure works

Three different questions are being asked, which is why three answers appear.

BMI
weight ÷ height², in kilograms and metres. How heavy you are for your height.
Waist to height
waist ÷ height, in any units. A quick check of fat carried around the middle.
Body fat
a published tape measure formula using neck, a separate abdomen or natural waist measurement, and height. It also uses hips for women. This is an estimate, not a direct measurement.

BMI is weight divided by height squared. The CDC describes it as a simple, low cost screening measure, not a direct body fat measurement or a diagnosis. It is useful precisely because it is easy to calculate consistently; that convenience does not supply the medical history, examination, or laboratory context needed to interpret one person’s health.

BMI cannot distinguish fat from muscle or bone and cannot show where fat is carried. Two people of the same height and weight therefore receive the same BMI even when their body composition differs. That is why StepShown places it beside other screening estimates instead of letting one category stand alone.

Waist to height ratio adds information about central fat distribution. UK clinical guidance recommends considering it alongside BMI for adults with BMI below 35 and uses 0.5 and 0.6 as screening boundaries. It does not diagnose a condition, and measurement technique and individual context still matter.

The optional body fat percentage comes from a published United States military tape measure formula. Its measurement site is not the same as the waist to height site, and the result is not a current service assessment, a direct body composition measurement, or a health category.

A caution about all of it. These are screening tools. They are designed to flag who might benefit from a closer look, and they carry no information about what anyone should do; that depends on blood pressure, blood work, history and context that no calculator has. Nothing here is medical advice, and none of it is a target. If weight is a difficult subject for you, this is a better conversation to have with a person than with a web page.

Common questions

Is BMI accurate?

BMI is a useful low cost screening measure, not a direct measurement of body fat or a diagnosis. It cannot separate fat from muscle and bone or show where fat is carried. The CDC recommends interpreting it with other information such as medical history, health behaviors, physical findings and laboratory results.

What is a better measurement than BMI?

No single tape and scale measure replaces clinical assessment. UK guidance recommends considering waist to height ratio alongside BMI for adults with BMI below 35 because it adds information about central adiposity. The 0.5 and 0.6 marks are screening boundaries, not diagnoses or personalized treatment targets.

How is body fat percentage estimated here?

StepShown applies a published U.S. military circumference equation using height, neck and an abdomen or natural waist measurement, plus hip circumference for women. It is a historical equation reference, not a current service assessment or a clinical measurement. Tape placement, rounding, body shape and differences between people can materially change the estimate, so StepShown does not assign it a health category.

Why are there two waist measurements?

They come from different protocols and should not be reused. For waist to height, measure midway between the bottom of the ribs and the top of the hips, just above the belly button, after breathing out naturally. The military equation instead uses the abdomen across the belly button for men and the smallest natural waist point for women. Keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin.

Why is my BMI high when I am not overweight?

Greater muscle mass is one possible reason BMI and other measurements disagree, because BMI cannot distinguish fat from muscle or bone. Measurement error and the limits of each model are other possibilities. A lower waist ratio or circumference estimate does not by itself prove why the BMI category differs.

Does BMI work for children?

Not with the fixed adult categories. From age 2 through 19, the CDC interprets BMI using a BMI for age percentile that depends on age and sex. StepShown shows the arithmetic but withholds the adult BMI category, adult weight band and military body fat estimate. Use the CDC child and teen calculator linked in the source panel or ask a qualified health professional for the correct percentile. UK guidance allows waist to height categories from age 5.

Do the thresholds change by ethnicity?

Some clinical guidelines use population-specific waist thresholds or additional interpretation because the relationship between a measurement and health risk is not identical for everyone. StepShown shows the standard adult bands and does not personalize thresholds by ancestry. A clinician can apply the guidance appropriate to you.

Should I use these numbers to set a weight target?

No. These are screening measures designed to indicate whether a closer look is warranted, and they carry no information about how you should get anywhere or whether you should try. A doctor can interpret them alongside blood pressure, blood work and your history, which is the context that actually determines what any of it means. If thinking about weight is a difficult area for you, that is a good reason to have this conversation with a person rather than a web page.
